Binance, EIP-7702, and the Engineer's Laptop: Anatomy of the Largest Crypto Heist in History

Binance, EIP-7702, and the Engineer's Laptop: Anatomy of the Largest Crypto Heist in History

US$6.36 billion in twenty minutes, across ten blockchains. The cryptography did not fail: the centralized custody of signing authority did.

On Thursday, October 29 at 20:05 UTC, an attacker who already had access to Binance's signing infrastructure drained roughly US$6.36 billion in twenty minutes across ten blockchains. On Ethereum they didn't use ordinary transfers — they delegated the hot wallet through EIP-7702 with 50 pre-signed authorizations and turned it into a sweeper. No cryptographic primitive was broken: an engineer's laptop was the key to the kingdom. Issuers froze about US$2.7 billion, but the attacker still controls roughly US$2.4 billion in ETH and BTC, beyond the reach of any kill-switch. The lesson is not "crypto needs to improve": it is that identity cannot be network position, and no authority to move billions should ever be one hop away from a laptop. Forensics and the architectural lesson below.

$6.36 Bdrained in a single burst
~20 minlength of the main assault
10blockchains hit
$2.4 Bbeyond any freeze's reach

01Twenty minutes, ten blockchains

The burst was surgical and followed a rehearsed script, stopwatch in hand:

  • T −36 hPreparation.Small withdrawals funded through Tornado Cash. The logistics begin.
  • T −4 hFinal rehearsal.Tests on two wallets and a full rehearsal on a third, barely four hours before the attack.
  • 20:05 UTCXRP.The first funds move out.
  • 20:10Solana and Optimism.
  • 20:20Bitcoin.In peel chains of 1,000 and 100 BTC per transaction.
  • 20:22Tron.The main burst closes.

The approximate total according to TRM Labs' on-chain analysis: US$6.36 billion — the largest crypto theft in history, more than four times the previous record.

Total drained$6.36 B
Ethereum200,630 ETH + US$1.875 B in USDT$3.79 B
Bitcoin18,270 BTC$1.47 B
Tron$628 M
XRP$296 M
Solana$96 M
Five more chainsArbitrum, Optimism, Base, Avalanche and Polygon$77 M

Bitcoin dropped more than 4%, to around US$78,000. And the most unsettling part was not the speed — it was the preparation. Not luck, not improvisation: logistics.

TRM Labs' attribution, with high confidence, points to TraderTraitor, North Korea's elite unit — the same actors behind the US$1.5 billion Bybit heist in February 2025.

A state-sponsored team against an infrastructure with a single point of authority.

02The technical trick: EIP-7702 and the 50 pre-signed authorizations

On Ethereum, the attacker made no ordinary transfers. They used EIP-7702 delegation — the upgrade that lets an ordinary account behave like a smart contract — to turn Binance's hot wallet into a sweeper that harvests everything sent to it, armed with 50 authorizations signed in advance. On the other nine chains, the transfers were normally signed ones.

Binance hot wallet (legitimate signatures)

└─ EIP-7702 delegation --> attacker's sweeper

· 50 pre-signed authorizations, ready to fire

· the vault becomes a vacuum: it harvests everything sent to it

Let that sink in, because it is the heart of the matter: every signature was valid. The elliptic curves did exactly their job. The keys that authorized the delegation were the legitimate keys of the signing infrastructure. The protocol worked as designed. What did not work was the trust model around the protocol: the authority to move billions was concentrated in a signing infrastructure that was, in turn, reachable from one engineer's endpoint.

03What did not fail, and the race against the freezes

Not one signature was forged. No cryptography was broken. No blockchain was attacked. By Binance's own first assessment, a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop opened the way into an internal service from which the attacker submitted unauthorized withdrawal requests that the signing system processed just like legitimate ones. Binance said it found no evidence of any wallet private key leak. None was needed: the legitimate signatures were the weapon.

To be fair, the defense moved fast on the stablecoin front: Tether froze at 21:01, Circle at 21:04, and between the issuers (Tether, Circle, Ripple and smaller ones) and Arbitrum's Security Council — which locked 8,426 ETH and 74.6 million ARB after midnight — a total of roughly US$2.7 billion ended up blocked. But the EIP-7702 delegation stayed alive for almost four hours: Binance revoked it at 00:10 UTC, more than an hour and a half after pausing withdrawals. And the attacker had already moved faster: they sold USDT to market makers and borrowed ETH against their own USDT on Aave.

Frozen in time

~US$2.7 B

Stablecoins from Tether, Circle, Ripple and other issuers, plus 8,426 ETH and 74.6M ARB locked by Arbitrum's Security Council.

Out of reach

~US$2.4 B

Still holds over 420,000 ETH and the 18,270 BTC: native ETH and BTC have no pause button.

That is the second, uncomfortable lesson: centralized kill-switches only work on centrally-issued assets. On blockchain-native assets, the only real defense is that signing authority is never concentrated and never compromised in the first place. Binance announced it will cover all losses through its SAFU emergency fund and its own money; end users, this time, do not foot the bill. The next exchange with the same architecture may not have the same cushion.

04The architectural lesson

Four principles this heist wrote in fire:

01Identity is not network position.

The laptop was "inside." Being inside the perimeter network granted it, directly or indirectly, the authority to move funds. Trust must be established cryptographically per participant, per operation — never inherited from where the machine is plugged in.

02Zero single-hop signing paths.

No individual credential — not an engineer's, not a service's, not a pipeline's — should be able to initiate the movement of billions on its own. Authentication of the channel is not authorization of the operation: they are two different things and must be treated as such.

03Discovery must not be authority.

The service that helps participants find each other does not need to read content, grant permissions, or sign anything. The less the rendezvous infrastructure knows, the less it is worth as loot.

04Hosts are potentially hostile.

The perimeter saved no one. The design must assume that any machine, any operating system, any endpoint may be compromised, and that the system's survival cannot depend on that never happening.

05What XionIA is (and what it is not)

I am part of the XionIA project, so this section leads with honesty, separating what exists from what is missing.

What it is today

  • User-space P2P kernel written in Go, UDP-first transport: STUN signaling with no default ports, and a WSS relay only as an auxiliary service.
  • Identity = an Ed25519 keypair: keys, not user accounts, not phone numbers.
  • Peer-to-peer communication end-to-end encrypted with Noise IK (X25519 + ChaCha20-Poly1305).
  • Identity-based ACL authorization; direct tunnels via ICE/STUN even behind CGNAT and double NAT, without exposing public endpoints.
  • Amnesiac faros (rendezvous servers) by design: they only ever see public keys and ephemeral endpoints, never content.
  • The console is the operations center; applications like SanJorge complement it without becoming the authority.
  • All of it runs in production, punching through networks with hostile ISPs that play games with ports.

What it is not today

  • It is not a custodian.
  • It does not do MPC or threshold signing.
  • It has no HSM integration.
  • It has no financial anomaly detection and no financial kill-switch.
  • A financial-grade deployment would require all of that as separate, specialized integration projects — and the project's technical document says so explicitly.

That separation between what exists and what is missing is not a rhetorical weakness: it is the only posture that lets an architecture be evaluated by serious people.

What it does offer today, as a layer: authenticated service-to-service communication without shared credentials, identity separated from the IP address, policy-based authorization per participant, and discovery without a central authority that sees traffic. Precisely the four things whose absence the infrastructure in the previous paragraphs paid for.

06Closing

Binance reacted fast, coordinated US$2.7 billion in freezes, and said it will cover the losses. This is not about finger-pointing: it is about a class of failure that keeps repeating — Bybit 2025, Binance 2026 — and about the next victim already standing in line. The answer is not more perimeter: it is cryptographic identity per participant, authorization verified at every hop, and zero central vaults.
